The 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), organized by the American Statistical Association (ASA), opens today at the Colorado Convention Center here. Keynotes will speak on the future of health care; elections, sports, sex, and drugs are featured session topics. Statistical experts will participate in more than 2,500 oral presentations, panel sessions, poster presentations, continuing education courses, career placement, business meetings, social activities and networking opportunities during the five-day program. The theme for the 2008 JSM is "Communicating Statistics: Speaking Out and Reaching Out."

The 2008 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), organized by the American Statistical Association (ASA), opens today at the Colorado Convention Center here. JSM, the world's largest annual gathering of statisticians, brings some 5,200 statisticians to Denver and, according to the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB), will pump $10.3 million into the city's economy. The conference runs through August 7th.



Statistical experts will participate in more than 2,500 oral presentations, panel sessions, poster presentations, continuing education courses, career placement, business meetings, social activities and networking opportunities during the five-day program. Attendees & Presenters:

The JSM participants represent academia, business & industry, and federal, state, provincial, and local governments. The majority of participants - about 75 percent -- are from the US; international participants represent the continents of Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.



19th Annual Cox Scholarship 5K race and 2.5 K Fun Run - Tuesday, August 5, 7-8:30 am:

The annual Cox Scholarship Race/Run, sponsored by the Caucus for Women in Statistics in conjunction with the ASA, benefits the Gertrude Cox scholarship fund. The race will take place from 7--8:30 am at the Cherry Creek Bike Path and Platte River Parkway. Currently, three Coloradans are registered in this run to raise funds for the scholarship.

There are 16 players in the tournament. There will be four first round games, from 8:30 to 10:30, each game consisting of four players.
