New Washable Computer Keyboard Protects Against Spread of Infection

Most people would refuse to work if their desk was in a bathroom, yet the average office desktop has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. The computer keyboard is a major source of harmful bacteria that can survive as long as 24 hours on the keys.

Study coordinator Dr. Charles Gerber, a microbiologist at the University of Arizona, reported that keyboards are dirtier than toilet seats, and require disinfecting to remove bacteria or viruses.



“Keyboards are hard to clean,” says Amiro “A simple wipe of a rag dampened with disinfectant is not enough. Most of the bacteria remains. Aggressive cleaning can damage conventional keyboards – any liquid which runs into the keyboard can damage it beyond repair.”

“With the use of bedside computers, hospital settings are especially vulnerable,” continues Amiro, “but classroom, office, and even household computer keyboards are also breeding grounds for harmful bacteria.”

And from her position as vice president of corporate development at Enron, Sherron Watkins realized that the numbers just weren’t adding up. Two letters to Chairman Kenneth Lay revealed her awareness of fishy goings-on at the Houston energy giant, in which she pointed out that the accounting methods governing certain accounts were not only unsound, but potentially illegal. Less than four months later, the company was bankrupt, involved in one of the worst financial disasters in history. By coming forward, Watkins, who still works at Enron, has become a reluctant hero.



Sherron Watkins will address attendees of the 13th Annual Fraud Conference & Trade Show (August 4-9, Hollywood, CA) hosted by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She will share her story with conference guests and the press in a presentation entitled “Enron: An Insider’s View” at the working lunch on Monday, Aug. 5.



Association Chairman Joseph T. Wells, who invited Ms. Watkins to address the conference, said, “The shocking discovery of widespread fraud at Enron was made possible only because employees like Ms. Watkins were brave enough to accept the fact that ¾ by coming forward ¾ they might be forever tarred as “whistleblowers.” Concerned citizens are not whistleblowers. In fact, at this particular moment in American history, there is no more critical message than this: people have both the right and the responsibility to report wrongdoing.”



On the other side of the fraud fence, former white-collar criminal John Everroad, Jr. will discuss his past misdeeds at the working lunch on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Everroad was convicted in 1999 of embezzling nearly $300,000 from his Nebraska employer and spent 20 months in prison. Also on Tuesday, fraud examiners will learn about the legal trends and new laws that will affect their investigations, in a session presented by the assistant U. S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi. J. Scott Newton, J. D., CFE, is also a member of the AssociationÂ’s Board of Regents.



The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners 13th Annual Fraud Conference & Trade Show will be held at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel in Hollywood, CA, August 4-9. Profession’s highest honor goes to architect known for exceptional contextual use of materials

The Board of Directors of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) voted today to award the 2010 AIA Gold Medal to Peter Bohlin, FAIA. Bohlin, founder of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, which has five U. S. offices, is renowned for his versatile, contextual use of materials.



The AIA Gold Medal, voted on annually, is considered to be the profession’s highest honor that an individual can receive. The Gold Medal honors an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. “His architecture clearly communicates that buildings are not just placed on the landscape, but are part of the landscape and indeed enhance the experience of nature,” wrote Ed Feiner, FAIA, former General Services Administration chief architect, in a letter of recommendation.

The Ledge House, which builds a serene, natural light-bathed retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains by arranging a series of timber and stone pavilions in a horseshoe pattern. The William J. Nealon Federal Building and US Courthouse in Scranton, Pa., which subtly integrates a new courthouse building into the original 19th century Neo-Classical facility with a multi-story, sky-lit atrium. The 5th Ave. Apple Store in New York City, a pure, pristine glass cube absent any structural steel that takes visitors below ground, away from its busy urban milieu, and into one of Apple’s flagship retail destinations. The Pocono Environmental Education Center in Dingmans Ferry, Pa., which distills Bohlin’s approach to nature center design to its essence with basic shed massing, a broad, overhaninging roof, natural materials, and a luminous, lantern-like glow from within. Seattle City Hall; its varied curtain wall facades of steel and glass uniquely reflect the solar orientation and urban fabric of each face.



Bohlin and his 200-person practice, which has offices in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle and San Francisco, have shown a deference to site context and a tendency for design humility that is becoming rarer and rarer among the top tier of practitioners. Again and again, his work demonstrates that great cities, towns, and buildings are created by designers looking to further the story of their place in a collaborative and contextual way, not by singular architecture that calls for heedless and self-serving attention. Awarding the Gold Medal to Bohlin, wrote Scogin in his recommendation letter, would communicate that “architects can in fact address all the complexities of our present day world with the grace and humility that privileges the best of human aspiration.”



Bohlin’s projects have earned 14 national AIA Awards, including COTE Top Ten Green Project Awards, AIA Committee on Education and AIA Housing Awards. He joins the ranks of such visionaries as Thomas Jefferson (1993), Frank Lloyd Wright (1949), Louis Sullivan (1944), LeCorbusier (1961), Louis Kahn (1971), I. M. Pei (1979), Frank Gehry (1999), and Renzo Piano (2008). In recognition of his legacy to architecture, his name will be chiseled into the granite Wall of Honor in the lobby of the AIA headquarters in Washington, D. C.

WAY is a multidisciplinary (language arts, science, mathematics, health, physical education, and social studies), multimedia program that addresses health and wellness issues, emphasizing the areas of physical activity and nutrition. According to program developers, the program meets state and national education standards, is designed after proven, successful models and based on sound theory. It is also supported by research conducted by the Institute for AmericaÂ’s Health (IAH).



WAY consists of 23 activities with traditional academic lessons embedded throughout. As students perform the core activities and supplement the program using a variety of multimedia resources (DVD, CD, and the Internet), they benefit by gaining a deeper understanding of themselves, their bodies, minds, and systems – all from a “wellness” perspective.



“The issues of childhood obesity and overweight are prominent on the national radar and experts across the board are referring to this problem as a ‘national epidemic.’ Some are even saying that this could be the first generation that does not live longer than their parents. We are trying to make sure that that doesn’t happen,” explains Stuart Reese, Interim Director of IAH.



“As part of the national ‘stroke belt,’ it could not be more fitting and appropriate that North Carolina take part in the premier of the WAY program,” adds Artie Kamiya, Senior Administrator for Health and Physical Education for the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) in North Carolina. “With this program, we have the opportunity to transform lives here and we intend to take it… Wake County will be a model for the entire country.”



Several studies suggest a current need for academic programs that focus on nutrition and physical activity. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), over the last 20 years, the incidence of overweight and obese adults in America has risen to epidemic proportions. In 2000, an estimated 64 percent of U. S. adults aged 20 years and older were either overweight or obese. An estimated 15 percent of children and adolescents aged 6–19 years were also overweight. And, the CDC says their research suggests the problem is only getting worse – the most significant concern is that overweight children will grow up to be overweight or obese adults, which increases their risk for major health problems.



Several teachers who participated in the training workshop in North Carolina expressed the same concerns in a blind survey. They say the WAY program is particularly important for the future of the U. S. workforce, noting that healthy children learn better and become healthy, academically prepared adults and therefore, “…a pool of more healthy candidates.” They believe workers who are healthier would increase overall productivity for corporations and reduce health care costs.



“This program will reduce health care costs because of a change in lifestyle. It is an ongoing need for our education system to get involved in setting standards for healthy living,” wrote one teacher.



The program is initially being rolled-out into 36 classrooms, with over 800 students using the program. The launch is a field test that will record changes in student behaviors, like adjustments in attendance, referrals and academic performance, as a result of physical activity and also measure changes in Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is an assessment generally used by physicians and health experts to determine if a person is underweight, overweight or within a healthy weight range that takes height and weight into account to gauge total body fat. The results of the field test will be used to support the program and assist in the ongoing development and design of the program.



“We are striving to provide the WAY program to schools throughout the country free of charge through funding from grants, donations and corporate sponsorships…This is all about the kids, their health and longevity,” says Reese.



IAH is a non-profit organization striving to enhance the health of all Americans through research and education. Their mission is to inspire, motivate and educate youth through educational opportunities, personal encounters, educational resources, and professional development for teachers and parents. National food safety lawyer Fred Pritzker is calling on the Wisconsin Legislature to kill a bill that would allow public sale of unpasteurized milk.

National food safety lawyer Fred Pritzker is calling on the Wisconsin legislature to kill a bill that would allow public sale of unpasteurized milk.



The Wisconsin bill that would allow raw milk sales direct from farms licensed by the state runs counter to what the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been warning for decades: Raw milk is a health hazard that can cause serious illness and wrongful death.



"This legislation would not only allow a dangerous product into the stream of commerce, some proponents want the bill to carve out almost all liability for raw milk producers,'' said Pritzker, a leading food poisoning attorney who has represented victims of contaminated raw milk. "This would be virtually unprecedented and dangerous. If supporters think raw milk is so safe, why do they want immunity from lawsuits?''



Even if the bill moves forward without the immunity clause, America's Dairyland would be setting a shameful example for the rest of the country by passing a law that its own public health officials have labeled as irresponsible, Pritzker said.



With microscopic fecal contamination from cows unchecked by pasteurization, outbreaks of foodborne illness linked to raw milk are inevitable.



Less than a week ago, FDA alerted consumers to a raw milk Campylobacter outbreak in Michigan (http://www. pritzkerlaw. com/campylobacter/michigan-campylobacter-family-farms-cooperative. html) associated with products from Forest Grove Dairy in Middlebury, Indiana (http://foodpoisoning. pritzkerlaw. com/archives/campylobacter-michigan-raw-milk-campylobacter-outbreak-prompts-illinois-warning. html). At least 24 people have been sickened in the outbreak and state epidemiologists from Michigan, Illinois and Indiana have been joined by FDA in their investigation of the outbreak.



The federal agency said in its latest consumer alert that contaminated raw milk was to blame for 1,614 illnesses in the U. S. from 1998 to 2008. Two of the victims died and 187 were hospitalized.

The FDA advisory said harmful bacteria in raw milk is especially dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, infants, young children and people with weakened immune systems. Besides Campylobacter (http://www. pritzkerlaw. com/campylobacter/), raw milk can carry E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella or other potentially lethal pathogens spread by the feces of cows.



"It's irresponsible for the Wisconsin legislature to give farmers the choice of selling raw milk when science has proven that raw milk is no more nutritious than pasteurized milk,'' Pritzker said. "It's a trap that will inflict an enormous toll on families who will be stricken by illness.''
