Aspen Education Group Receives Accreditation from the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA)

CITA Believes Aspen is "Living its Mission."

Cerritos, CA (PRWEB) September 6, 2007

Aspen Education Group, the leading provider of therapeutic schools and programs for struggling and underachieving young people, today announced that their network of schools have earned the prestigious CITA accreditation. CITA, the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, is an agency dedicated to advancing the quality of education. CITA's systems of accreditation promote international quality schools, continuous improvement and student success. Comprised of the premier American educational accrediting agencies, CITA accredits more than 30,000 public and private educational institutions in 100 countries, touching over 17 million students.

"Aspen is extremely proud to achieve CITA accreditation and become a part of CITA's outstanding network of schools," said Elliot Sainer, president of Aspen Education Group. "This designation is a direct result of the successful implementation of best practices across our continuum of services and our ongoing commitment to excellence, and will ensure that academic credits earned at Aspen are legitimately recognized by institutions around the world."

Accreditation is based on meeting or exceeding CITA Standards, and is a voluntary commitment on the part of a school or group of schools to achieve high standards, engage in common protocol of school improvement, and participate in peer reviews of schools. The hallmark of accreditation is that a school is as it represents itself, that it is trustworthy and that is protects the public trust by reaching high standards and acting in a trustworthy manner.

CITA representatives visited Aspen's corporate office this past May and ultimately prepared a report granting accreditation. The report stated: "[Aspen Education Group] has a clear mission, purpose, and understanding of objectives in support of the children and families it chooses to serve.... Aspen Education Group is successfully enhancing the goal for promoting academic and personal growth in students and their families. The corporation is living its mission."

"CITA is proud to have Aspen Education Group as part of its accredited corporations," said Dr. Claudia Carter, assistant executive director of CITA. "We believe Aspen is an extremely high quality company, and we were particularly impressed with their staff of experts."

Demand for CITA accreditation is now worldwide. Accreditation helps schools and colleges trust in the education of other accredited schools and helps parents, students and the public believe in these institutions. The standards guide policies for awarding credit, granting diplomas, and other educational procedures.

Aspen Education Group is recognized nationwide as the largest and most comprehensive network of therapeutic schools and programs. Aspen Education Group offers professionals and families the opportunity to choose from a variety of therapeutic settings in order to best meet a student's unique academic and emotional needs. Aspen Education Group has been profiled by major news and television organizations around the world, including U. S. News and World Report, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and People magazine, as well as on CNN, ABC's 20/20 and Good Morning America, NBC's The Today Show and Dateline NBC, National Public Radio and the syndicated television show Dr. Phil. H2O Mineral Foundation Takes Mineral Makeup to the Next Level

H2O Mineral Foundation Takes Mineral Makeup to the Next Level

Washington company combines loose minerals with nutrient water infusion to create foundation makeup that looks perfect while nourishing and protecting the skin.

Raymond, WA (PRWEB) May 17, 2008

Dori Patrick and Meri Yardley discovered how to meld superior long-lasting foundation makeup appearance with effective skin nourishment and protection. The trick was to devise an epidermal delivery system to infuse the nutrients into the skin. The answer is water.

Sisters Dori and Meri, owners of Terra Firma Cosmetics, wanted to improve on the idea of using minerals in makeup. After analyzing the properties of the major contenders on the market, they realized that the missing piece of the puzzle was direct epidermal and dermal nutrition. With that, they developed a "dry water" process that immediately penetrates the skin with nutrient water.

As stated on their Web page at http://www. terrafirmacosmetics. com/h2ominerals. html (http://www. terrafirmacosmetics. com/h2ominerals. html), one can actually feel the nutrient water on the skin as Terra Firma's H2O Mineral Foundation is applied. The water immediately penetrates the skin to release more than 70 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. The resulting "cooling" effect helps to soothe and calm the skin in preparation for other makeup.

Terra Firma's H2O Mineral Foundation joins their impressive existing collection of safe, non-toxic cosmetics and skin care products with an equally impressive motto: "get compliments on your skin, not your makeup."

In the words of Diana Mathias, Los Angeles staff writer for The Epoch Times, "gone is the idea that you have to sacrifice the health of your skin in order to be beautiful." In the article, Dori Patrick is quoted as noting that their products actually make her skin feel better than if she was wearing nothing on it at all. She further noted that many women who previously wore no makeup at all are now wearing Terra Firma products.

The sisters and their six siblings were raised by parents who placed great value on their "natural" lifestyle, no doubt due in part to their father's profession as a nutritional consultant. Dori and Meri were inspired early in life as the condition of their mother, who contracted breast cancer, made them cognizant of how many damaging chemicals are present in a wide variety of women's products.

Dori and Meri realized some time ago that quality was lacking in the beauty care realm of the natural and healthy market, particularly in terms of product, selection, and packaging. As sisters who were raised in a health conscious environment, they never gave up the search for effective beauty care products that were safe, natural, and healthy. After shopping department stores, their mission was clear: they had to formulate their own safe beauty care products and make them widely available.

About Terra Firma Cosmetics:

With a lifetime of inspiration and their successes in research, marketing and product distribution, Terra Firma Cosmetics are bringing beauty products to a better, safer, healthier level.

Caldwell School District Opens Idaho's First LEED Silver Public School Building Expert McKinstry helps District Tout Benefits of New, Energy Efficient Facility

Caldwell School District Opens Idaho's First LEED Silver Public School Building Expert McKinstry helps District Tout Benefits of New, Energy Efficient Facility

Caldwell School District has become one of the first schools in Idaho to make the connection between energy cost savings and increased revnues for education. It has set a precedent for schools by moving away from bid/spec as the best method to fund public projects, and moved toward an integrated design/build approach as exemplified by building expert McKinstry.

Boise, ID (PRWEB) September 16, 2009 -

On September 15th Caldwell School District hosted legislators, community leaders, and other stakeholders during the opening of the state's first school to pursue LEED Silver certification, Van Buren Elementary. McKinstry, an Idaho-based building expert, provided mechanical engineering services and sustainability consulting for the school, which was built with a host of energy efficient features expected to save the district thousands in future energy expenditures and provide a healthier learning environment for its students - 89% of whom fall below the poverty line.

Caldwell's goal for Van Buren Elementary is two fold: to significantly provide a better indoor environment for students and to significantly reduce the schools overall operating costs. According to the US Department of Energy, the money spent on fueling a school exceeds the money spent on salaries, supplies, and books. In fact, schools spend in excess of $6 billion annually on energy alone, a cost that could be defrayed by 25% with better conservation initiatives. Caldwell School District anticipates saving 30% in future energy costs by equipping Van Buren Elementary with energy saving features.

"Energy-smart building choices make good sense," said Jennifer Swindell of The Caldwell School District. "Not only do they save money while decreasing our carbon footprint, but it's been proven that energy saving innovation in school buildings greatly improve our teachers' ability to do their job and their students' abilities to learn."

Van Buren's new school building is 70,000 square feet and boasts a number of improvements designed to conserve energy and enhance learning. These include: the building's V-shaped design intended to capture solar energy; large classroom windows that provide illumination throughout 90% of the building; building products made from recycled materials; high-performance kitchen and bathroom fixtures to maximize water efficiency; and HVAC systems that keep room temperatures consistent and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Project funding for the school, which cost $12 million to construct, came from ESPC (Energy Savings Performance Contract) incentive programs offered by Idaho power as well as funding assistance from the Idaho Office of Energy Resources. By going against the norm and choosing McKinstry's integrated design/build approach, Caldwell School District has distinguished itself from other educational organizations who erroneously believe that bid/spec is the best approach to public funding. McKinstry's integrated delivery and the collaborative working relationship between project teams ensured the smooth integration of systems to streamline processes, eliminate waste, and drive down costs for the district, which helped reinforced its conviction in the design/build approach.

"The Caldwell School District is the first in Idaho to make the connection between long-term energy savings and increased education resources," noted Ash Awad, McKinstry's VP of Energy Services. "It has shown unwavering community leadership in its commitment to set a new standard for education through emphasizing energy conservation and operational efficiency. Its vision of considering TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) for both existing and new facilities arose out of a desire to ensure that students within its jurisdiction receive equal access to a safer, healthier, and more enriching learning environment. The Caldwell School District's vision and sustained efforts in this regard has made it a model for Idaho."

In addition to an improved school environment, The Caldwell School District hopes to use Van Buren Elementary's sustainable features as a teaching tool. The district is currently working with administrators to integrate sustainable concepts into a curriculum that will demonstrate to students how small changes - such as biking to school, recycling, conserving energy and buying local - can make a difference in their lives everyday.

About McKinstry

McKinstry is a full-service, design-build-operate-and-maintain (DBOM) firm specializing in consulting, construction, energy, and facility services. Our innovative, integrated delivery methodology provides clients with a single point of accountability that drives waste, cost, time, and redundancy out of the design/build process. We employ over 1,600 professional staff and trades people throughout the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, West, Midwest, and Southwest regions of the United States with operations in more than 15 states. McKinstry advocates collaborative and sustainable solutions designed to ensure occupant comfort, improve systems efficiency, reduce facility operational costs, and ultimately optimize profitability for "The Life of Your Building."

Something Fishy Going On? Omega 3 Fortified Milk, Eggs & Cheese is Vegetarian Society’s Worst Nightmare

Something Fishy Going On? Omega 3 Fortified Milk, Eggs & Cheese is Vegetarian Society’s Worst Nightmare

Despite publicity about toxity in fish, and unsustainability of fish stocks, fish oils are increasingly being added to dairy products to increase levels of omega 3 essential fatty acids. This could be The Vegetarian Society’s worst nightmare as milk, cheese, yoghurts and margarine are no longer acceptable for a vegetarian diet. However a new vegetarian EPA Omega 3 product could save their veggie bacon.

(PRWEB) June 7, 2006

New research by UK margarine brand Flora has suggested that consumption of Omega 3 in the UK remains low as families are still not consuming sufficient quantities of foodstuffs rich in the important nutrient. The survey indicated that more than 80% of people were concerned that no one in their family was consuming enough Omega-3.

London Nutritionist and founder of Foods For Life Yvonne Bishop-Weston agrees that people are right to be concerned. “Omega 3 is an essential nutrient often missing from the modern diet” she says “ but people need to differentiate between the different types of Omega 3 – it’s actually the long chain fatty acids EPA and DHA that our body need for brain health and cell membrane integrity. Despite a higher consumption of omega 3 rich foods the EPIC/Oxford University study showed vegetarians and vegans were still lacking in DHA and EPA”

Omega 3, found in oily fish, green leafy herbs such as purslane, nuts and seeds, is thought to be important for heart health and brain function. Some experts believe it may also help learning and concentration among children, and may also be good for joint and health.

Canadian author and registered dietitian, Vesanto Melina, specializing in vegetarian nutrition and foods confirms “It can be a challenge for many of us to produce adequate amounts of EPA and DHA. Thus, many may enjoy benefits from direct sources, and preformed EPA and DHA may improve our health.”

Flora, St Ivel, Marks and Spencer and many others have recently launched new products with additional Omega-3 essential fats.

All of this is a bit of a headache for the Vegetarian Society and those on vegetarian and religious diets. New milks high in omega 3 pose a big problem for the UK’s Vegetarian Society and it’s trademarked V symbol scheme. This is because new omega 3 rich dairy products have fish oil added to them or made from cows who have been unnaturally fed fish.

The Vegetarian Society has campaigned vigorously in recent years, through their lavish ‘fishconceptions’ campaign part funded by Sir Paul McCartney to counter the misconception that some people still have that vegetarians eat fish.

When it comes to eggs only free range eggs fed GM and fish free meal are deemed acceptable for receiving the Vegetarian Society approved logo.

However there are still no criteria for Vegetarian Society approved dairy products. Thus approved products could contain dairy products from cruelly treated factory farmed dairy cows fed fish and GM soya.

The Vegetarian Society claim there is no agreed free range gold standard that they could impose on their licensees, but of course there are standards used by the RSPCA (Freedom Foods) and The Soil Association’s Organic Standard that are a starting point. It’s ironic that even McDonalds allegedly have stricter husbandry standards than the Vegetarian Society in order to avoid GM contamination of their milk.

Even the vegetarian guidelines that the Vegetarian Society negotiated with the Food Standards Agency are stricter than the criteria for V Symbol approval.

St Ivel and Flora’s website tells us “Omega 3 from fish (EPA/DHA) are the most effective forms of Omega 3 as they do not need to be converted in the body and can be put to use straight away. That's why we need to eat fish as part of our balanced diet.”

A new vegetarian DHA EPA product called V Pure makes a lie of the last sentence of that statement and offers a light at the end of the tunnel for The Vegetarian Society. The makers of V Pure use a secret natural process to extract the pure EPA and DHA from Algae (which is where fish get DHA and EPA from)

A spokesperson for the V-Pure brand says “We expect V Pure to be appearing in many new products fortified with omega 3 Vegetarian DHA and EPA from bread to soft drinks. There are many problems associated with the fish based product; endangered fish stocks, toxicity, environmental damage and of course the fact that fish is unsuitable for so many different groups of consumer”

The V Pure brand is the first vegan approved alternative that is rich in EPA as well as DHA and is already available as a dietary supplement in liquid and capsule forms. They expect to get the relevant EU approval to add it to various foods and already have a queue of companies who would prefer to use their product rather than fish based EPA DHA.

Lets hope our grandchildren will still be able to use the phrase “there’s plenty more fish in the sea”

Definition taken from The FSA guidance on vegetarian labeling at http://www. food. gov. uk/multimedia/pdfs/vegitermsgn. pdf (http://www. food. gov. uk/multimedia/pdfs/vegitermsgn. pdf)

The term ‘vegetarian’ should not be applied to foods that are, or are made from or with the aid of products derived from animals that have died, have been slaughtered, or animals that die as a result of being eaten. Animals means farmed, wild or domestic animals, including for example, livestock poultry, game, fish, shellfish, crustacea, amphibians, tunicates, echinoderms, molluscs and insects.

Author Claims Peanut Butter Scare Is the Result of Nutritional Ignorance

Author Claims Peanut Butter Scare Is the Result of Nutritional Ignorance

"Even uncontaminated peanut butter poses a serious health risk," claims Ron Garner, author of the new book - "Conscious Health - Choosing Natural Solutions for Optimum Health and Lifelong Vitality."

Vancouver, BC. (PRWEB) February 19, 2007

"Virtually all commercial - grade peanut butter contains unhealthy quantities of sugar and salt. Throw in hydrogenated oils, additives and preservatives, and the loss of vital nutrients due to processing, and you are paving the way for future health problems."

Even having a basic understanding of the nutritional requirements of the body can help you avoid and even reverse debilitating health conditions well into your "Golden" years.

"Conscious Health - Choosing Natural Solutions for Optimum Health and Lifelong Vitality" is an easy to follow, comprehensive guide designed to help you protect your family and demystify the secrets of vibrant health, mental clarity and endless stamina.

Ron Garner goes on to say, "We don't need all these "convenience" foods advertised on TV and in magazines… our bodies were not made to handle them. Why take a short-term dietary risk when you can go back to the basics and give your body what it really needs? Real food, balanced hormones, an active, fulfilling sex life - without drugs. Change your life!"

He has discovered the secrets to enjoying an energetic life free of disease and filled with joy and peace of mind. But he didn't come by this easily. As Ron watched his health rapidly deteriorate he was forced to find answers. He was desperate.

Ron explains: "All my life, I felt there had to be answers as to why we become sick and diseased, and how we can return to health. I asked my physicians, 'Why do doctors only treat symptoms? Why don't they talk about the causes of illnesses?' I received no answers from them, so I asked myself, what can I do? Do I have any power to change my health?"

Doctors, drugs and conventional medicine failed again and again to curb the rising tide of Ron's allergies, eczema, asthma, digestive problems, diarrhea, chronic fatigue, and rapid aging.

Driven by the fear of an early grave, Ron Garner, retired School principal, set out on a journey to discover the simple truth that empowers your body to heal naturally. His research has led him to become an authority on nutrition and a passionate advocate for natural living.

More importantly he restored his body to perfect health and is sharing that priceless knowledge in his new book - "Conscious Health - Choosing Natural Solutions for Optimum Health and Lifelong Vitality."

There is nothing mysterious about enjoying a life free of health problems; it is merely a matter of making the right choices and altering your lifestyle accordingly. Finally, that knowledge can be at your fingertips just by visiting: http://conscioushealth. namastepublishing. com/ (http://conscioushealth. namastepublishing. com/)

Polaris Marketing Research Supports International Literacy Day

Polaris Marketing Research Supports International Literacy Day

Atlanta Marketing Research Company helps nonprofit improve fund-raising efforts.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) September 20, 2009

Marketing research company, Polaris Marketing Research, Inc., (polarismr. com) announced today their involvement in helping Literacy Action, Inc. celebrate International Literacy Day on September 8, 2009.

Polaris Marketing Research staff David Jean-Baptiste and Helen Pham designed an HTML-template that was sent to the email lists of the organization and its trustees, raising much-needed donations. In addition, the organization made its own donation to support Literacy Action's efforts.

Literacy Action's Executive Director Emily Ellison said, "Nonprofit organizations such as Literacy Action have been dramatically impacted by the downturn in the nation's economy. Fortunately, we have loyal supporters like Polaris Marketing Research, who help to fill infrastructure gaps that are often part of the day-to-day realities of nonprofit life. For example, this year on International Literacy Day (September 8), Debra Semans and her colleagues at Polaris helped to create an email blast about Literacy Day that could be used by our trustees in reaching out to their contacts. As a result of that blast, we netted approximately $2,000 in online contributions in a matter of a few hours. We had neither the technical expertise nor the time to do this as a staff, and the email blast would not have been possible without the help of Polaris. In addition, the folks at Polaris understand how significantly functional illiteracy impacts individuals, families, companies, and entire communities, and their support of our mission and the resources they provide to us are enormous. For this ongoing support, I am profoundly grateful."

Literacy Action provides free instruction in math, reading, and writing skills enabling students to progress in their journey toward self-sufficiency. Literacy Action is supported by such companies as Georgia Pacific, Turner Broadcasting and Cox Enterprises. Annually, 80 percent of Literacy Action's students increase two grade levels, increasing their productivity and independence. Some important facts about adult literacy:

A rise of 1 percent in literacy scores leads to a 2.5 percent rise in GDP per person (The Economist, August 28, 2004).  America could save more than $17 billion in Medicaid and other expenditures for health care for the uninsured by graduating all students from high school. (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2006).  There are approximately 40 million functionally illiterate adults in the United State.

"Many people don't understand the severity of the adult illiteracy problem in our society and its economic impact. We were delighted to join with such a strong organization in this important work. The Polaris team did a great job for Literacy Action and I am very proud of them", said company founder and President, Jan Carlson. Polaris Senior Vice President Debra Semans serves on Literacy Action's Board of Trustees and is Co-Chair of the Marketing and Advocacy Committee.

The Jackson Laboratory One Step Closer to Southwest Florida

The Jackson Laboratory One Step Closer to Southwest Florida

The Jackson Laboratory, an independent, nonprofit genetics research firm, plans to expand to Southwest Florida with help from state funding. The new facility is projected to create between 200 and 250 jobs for the area.

Port Charlotte, FL (Vocus) June 5, 2010

In May, the Florida legislature voted to approve the state's budget, which included a $50-million appropriation for the Innovation Incentive Program – part of a three-year, $130-million commitment to establish a branch of The Jackson Laboratory in Collier County, one of the five counties that make up the new Southwest Florida region.

The Jackson Laboratory, an independent, nonprofit genetics research firm, currently has 1,400 employees located in Bar Harbor, Maine, and in Sacramento, California. The expectations are that the Florida project will create 200 to 250 new jobs in Southwest Florida – specifically in the greater Naples area of Collier County – over the next several years.

The company’s President and CEO, Rick Woychik, Ph. D., called the state’s funding “an important first step” in advancing the development of a branch of The Jackson Laboratory in Southwest Florida. However, in order to proceed, the project also requires institutional partnerships in Southwest Florida, matching funds from Collier County and approval by The Jackson Laboratory’s Board of Trustees.

Based in Maine, the new Southwest Florida facility would be the company’s first expansion since the opening of The Jackson Laboratory-West in Sacramento in 2001. Since then, that facility has moved to larger quarters and now has more than 100 employees. During the same period, the Laboratory’s headquarters in Bar Harbor added nearly 300 new jobs, and officials there expect to add approximately 200 more during the next 5-10 years.

Plans for The Jackson Laboratory’s new Southwest Florida facility call for about 200 employees. Working in collaboration with their colleagues in Maine, scientists in Southwest Florida would investigate the genetic basis of such diseases as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's, along with the foundations and stages of human development and aging.

Business leaders and economic planners from throughout Southwest Florida already foresee The Jackson Laboratory’s new facility in Collier County lighting the way for an even larger research and education community – one that has already begun to spark the Southwest Florida economy. And members of the new Southwest Florida Economic Development Partnership are excited about the business it will bring to their five-county region.

The Southwest Florida Economic Development Partnership is made up of Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Lee and Sarasota counties, all of which have come together to put the economic well-being of the Southwest Florida region front and center. The focus of the partnership is the recruitment, retention and creation of high-wage jobs in targeted industries, such as high-tech, health, life and environmental sciences, information technology, and specialty manufacturing. Baptist Medical Center's Patient Outcomes Among Highest in the Nation, According to Independent Study

Baptist Medical Center's Patient Outcomes Among Highest in the Nation, According to Independent Study

In 2010, no hospital in Mississippi has more Five-Star Ratings than Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, Miss., as recognized by HealthGrades, America's leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Baptist is among the top 10 percent in the nation for Vascular Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Gastrointestinal Care, according to a comprehensive annual study released today by HealthGrades. Baptist achieved five stars in carotid surgery, treatment of bowel obstruction, gallbladder surgery, prostatectomy and total knee replacement.

Jackson, Miss. (Vocus) October 14, 2009

In 2010, no hospital in Mississippi has more Five-Star Ratings than Baptist Medical Center (http://www. mbhs. org/about_baptist/healthgrades_awards. htm) in Jackson, Miss., as recognized by HealthGrades, America's leading independent healthcare ratings organization.

"Our successes are made possible because of our team approach, which inte¬grates our clinical staff with our dedicated medical staff," said Baptist Chief Medical Officer Eric McVey, MD. This study validates our efforts to improve quality and illustrates our focus on patient safety."

Every year America's hospitals are ranked for quality of care. According to the 12th annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America study, top-rated hospitals have a 52 percent lower mortality rate than the U. S. national average. And when the top-rated hospitals were compared to the poorest performers, there was an even greater difference, 72 percent lower mortality.

"This honor shows Baptist's commitment to strive for excellence," Dr. McVey added. "As we move forward, we will continue to focus investments in the latest, innovative technology, enhancing our facility and advancing our clinical expertise. This will enable us to sustain and increase positive outcomes."

Baptist defines quality in a variety of ways including clinical quality of care, credentials, and patient satisfaction. Patients might see quality as the cleanliness of the facility or convenient parking. For health care organizations, quality is defined by how the organization treats illnesses and measures outcomes.

"There has been much publicity about measures of quality in the health care industry. Baptist voluntarily participates in a variety of measurements for health care quality," said Dr. McVey. "In order for us to achieve our vision to become the first choice for patients, physicians and employees in Mississippi, it is imperative we provide outstanding quality in all areas."

Even though many measurements exist to evaluate quality of care, the most conclusive way to recognize the quality of care is improving is to measure outcomes. Since 1999, HealthGrades has studied and measured the quality of care at the nation's approximately 5,000 hospitals and published the results of its annual research on the Web to assist consumers in choosing a hospital. HealthGrades' star rating system tells consumers whether a particular hospital's performance is "Best" with 5 Stars, "As Expected" with 3 Stars or "Poor" with 1 Star on a particular procedure or condition. Hospital ratings are based on patient outcomes, specifically, risk-adjusted mortality or complications.

"HealthGrades' recognition is good news for citizens in Mississippi. It's important for residents in our area to know they can find the high-quality care they seek right here at Baptist," said Dr. McVey.

HealthGrades Ratings

HealthGrades' hospital ratings and awards reflect the track record of patient outcomes at hospitals in the form of mortality and complication rates. HealthGrades rates hospitals independently based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated.

For 28 procedures and treatments, HealthGrades issues star ratings that reflect the mortality and complication rates for each category of care. Hospitals receiving a 5-star rating have mortality or complication rates that are below the national average, to a statistically significant degree. A 3-star rating means the hospital performs as expected. One-star ratings indicate the hospital's mortality or complication rates in that procedure or treatment are statistically higher than average. Because the risk profiles of patient populations at hospitals are not alike, HealthGrades risk-adjusts the data to allow for apples-to-apples comparisons.

More information on today's HealthGrades study, including the complete methodology, can be found at www. healthgrades. com.

Test Your Mood on National Depression Screening Day with a Free Screening

Whether for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or depression—health screenings provide a quick and easy way to spot the first signs of serious illness and can reach people who might not otherwise seek professional medical advice. - On Thursday, October 7th as part of National Depression Screening Day, the Mental Health Association in Texas, Samaritan Center for Counseling and Pastoral Care, Saint James Episcopal Church, and the Austin Psychiatric Society is offering free mental health information materials and confidential depression screenings in the Austin and San Marcos areas.

(PRWEB) October 8, 2004

Whether for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or depression—health screenings provide a quick and easy way to spot the first signs of serious illness and can

Reach people who might not otherwise seek professional medical advice.

On Thursday, October 7th as part of National Depression Screening Day, the Mental Health Association in Texas, Samaritan Center for Counseling and Pastoral Care, Saint James Episcopal Church, and the Austin Psychiatric Society is offering free mental health information materials and confidential depression screenings in the Austin and San Marcos areas.

“People with depression often feel alone, not realizing that depression affects many people,” said Lynn Lasky, LMSW, president and CEO of the Mental Health Association in Texas. “In fact, one out of every five adults may experience a depression at some point in their lives, yet fewer than half of those suffering from the

Disorder actually receive treatment, and depression is treatable.”

National Depression Screening Day, held each year during Mental Illness Awareness Week, is designed to call attention to the illnesses of depression on a national level. It is also an opportunity to educate the public about the symptoms and effective treatments of depression, a time for individuals to be screened for the disorder, and a way to connect those in need of treatment with the mental health care system.

“Clinical depression is a common, yet treatable, medical illness and public health issue affecting more than 19 million American adults each year,” said Lasky. “Depression is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away.”

Mental illnesses often have symptoms that are confused with those of other illnesses, or symptoms that many do not think to discuss with their health care provider. National Depression Screening Day is an opportunity for the public to learn more about the signs and symptoms of these disorders. Some may be surprised to recognize the signs and symptoms in themselves or someone they love.

Common symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, loss of pleasure in usual activities, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, and worthlessness, changes in sleep and appetite, loss of energy, restlessness, and thoughts of death or suicide.

“For people with depression, without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years; delaying a person’s ability to live and enjoy life,” said Lasky. “Take the test, and if you need to, see a doctor and if you need it, get treatment. Treatment works.”

FACTS: Why Screen for Depression?

• Clinical depression is a serious, yet treatable, medical illness.

• Clinical depression can lead to suicide.

• Sometimes people with depression mistakenly believe that the symptoms of depression are a "normal part of life."

• Clinical depression affects men and women of all ages, races and socioeconomic groups.

• One in four women and one in ten men will experience depression at some point during their lifetime.

• Two thirds of those suffering from the illness do not seek the necessary treatment.

• Depression can co-occur and complicate other medical conditions.

• More than 80% of all cases of clinical depression can be effectively treated with medication, psychotherapy or a combination of both.

• Screenings are often the first step in getting help.

What Is a Depression Screening Like?

Attendees at screening programs, which are free and confidential;

• complete a written screening test,

• discuss the results with a mental health professional,

• and, if necessary, learn where to go for additional help.

Who Should Attend a Depression Screening?

People suffering from depression often experience some of these key symptoms*:

• A persistent sad, anxious or "empty" mood

• Sleeping too little, early morning awakening, or sleeping too much

• Reduced appetite and weight loss, or increased appetite and weight gain

• Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

• Restlessness or irritability

• Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions

• Fatigue or loss of energy

• Thoughts of death or suicide

-Depression screenings are not a professional diagnosis. Screenings point out the presence or absence of depressive symptoms and provide a referral for further evaluation if needed.

Individuals should see a doctor or a qualified mental health professional if they experience five or more of these symptoms for longer than two weeks or if the symptoms are severe enough to interfere with their daily routine.

Greenville County Schools Live on Lawson Enterprise Solutions

Greenville County Schools Live on Lawson Enterprise Solutions

South Carolina’s largest school district will use Lawson applications to help improve administrative efficiency and reduce operational costs.

St. Paul, Minn. (Vocus) August 29, 2009

Greenville County Schools in South Carolina recently completed the first phase of an organization-wide deployment of an enterprise software system from Lawson Software (Nasdaq: LWSN). This Lawson deployment includes Lawson System Foundation and the Lawson S3 Enterprise Financial Management (http://www. lawson. com/wcw. nsf/pub/fins) and Strategic Human Capital Management (http://www. lawson. com/wcw. nsf/pub/shcm) suites as well as Lawson Business Intelligence (http://www. lawson. com/wcw. nsf/pub/businessintelligence). These application suites are helping the district centralize key business functions and gain a broader view of financial data across the organization. Lawson Professional Services (http://www. lawson. com/wcw. nsf/pub/Services_index) provided implementation services for the system rollout.

The School District of Greenville County is located in Greenville, S. C., and is the largest school district in the state. The district employs 9,000 people and serves approximately 70,000 students in 90 school locations. Eight Greenville County high schools are in the top 6 percent in the nation, making the list of Newsweek’s Best High Schools for 2009.

The Greenville County district had previously relied on a legacy system that included numerous disparate home-grown systems along with many manual processes. In order to streamline its financial and human resource systems, decrease paper-based practices and enable continued technology growth, the district needed to upgrade and overhaul its entire operation. After choosing the Lawson solution, the school district launched what it has dubbed “The GRETIL Project” — Greenville Realizes Efficiency Through Integrating Lawson. The Lawson applications are also helping the district achieve additional objectives:

Replace manual paper processes and improve efficiencies through automated work flow, including requisition approval and budget transfer process flow.  Create a centralized repository of information, creating efficiencies through data accuracy and reduced redundancy and allowing for meaningful, synchronized data from the district office through all the schools.  Activate a new accounting structure to standardize relevant financial data with the ability to produce consolidated financial statements and spreadsheets from a single repository.  Provide ease of use for staff and streamlined customer service.

“Increasing constituent and regulatory demands for greater accountability pose significant challenges to school districts with tight budgets,” said Brian Murphy, general manager, Public Sector, Lawson. “Lawson helps districts simplify administration, improve accuracy and meet their imperatives for greater efficiency and transparency, so they have a smooth path for the real business of educating kids.”

Phase 2 of Greenville’s system rollout will focus on additional components of the Lawson Strategic Human Capital Management suite, including Teacher Contract Administration (http://www. lawson. com/WCW. nsf/pub/shcm00982E), Time and Attendance, and Employee Self-Service. More information about this overall project can be found at www. greenville. k12.sc. us/gcsd/depts/finance/gretil. asp (http://www. greenville. k12.sc. us/gcsd/depts/finance/gretil. asp).

Lawson serves more than 140 public sector customers, including nine of the top 50 U. S. school districts, three of the top seven state governments and 20 of the nation’s largest utilities. Public sector organizations rely on Lawson solutions to help meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders —students, employees, parents, taxpayers, vendors and communities.

8 Tips Help New College Graduates Manage Debt

8 Tips Help New College Graduates Manage Debt

Freedom Debt Relief suggests what college grads need to know about debt reduction

San Mateo, Calif. (Vocus) June 10, 2010

College and university graduates this year face a difficult job market, and their mortarboards come with a heavy debt burden, Freedom Debt Relief vice president Kevin Gallegos said this week, making it more important than ever that grads know how to handle their debt (http://www. freedomdebtrelief. com/otheroptions. php).

Two-thirds of students graduated with some educational debt in 2008, with an average debt of more than $23,000. With average cumulative educational debt increasing by 5.6 percent a year, that total is likely almost $26,000 this year. And a report issued earlier this year found that 25 percent of indebted students borrowed $35,500 or more. All of those loans add up: The projected total U. S. student loan debt outstanding for FY2010, when both public and private loans are included, is about $763.4 billion. Put another way, that's $2,704 for every person in the nation.

Those figures do not include other debt, such as credit card debt or loans. In fall 2009, 84 percent of students had at least one credit card, and half of them had at least four credit cards. The average undergraduate has $3,173 in credit card debt before even leaving school.

"These statistics make it painfully clear that many college graduates have far more than the average debt," Gallegos said. "This year’s graduates are entering one of the toughest job markets in our nation's history, and it is crucial that they know what to do to handle their debt in the coming months and years."

1. Pay on time. Paying bills on time is the No. 1 way to build a strong credit rating – and avoid getting into more debt. "The track record graduates establish in the first years of working and paying bills will help build a stronger financial future," said Gallegos. "Setting up a system to support good record-keeping and paying bills on time is extremely important."

2. Be aware of income-based loan repayment options. Graduates (and students) who are struggling with debt have some options for getting relief with student loan debt if their loans were issued by the federal government program. As of July 2009, an income-based repayment plan caps the amount graduates must pay on student loans at 15 percent of discretionary income. After 25 years, any remaining balance will be forgiven.

If the borrower works in public service, the balance can be forgiven after 10 years. New laws make the program even more generous in the future: For loans issued after 2014, the repayment cap will be 10 percent of discretionary income, and the loan program will forgive outstanding balances after 20 years. To benefit, borrowers will need to provide paperwork proving that they have worked in public service for 10 years.

3. Pay credit card debt first. First and foremost, use caution when using credit cards, and if already paying off student loan debt, it is helpful to put away the cards completely to avoid racking up more debt. Using cash or a debit card for most purchases helps anyone stay within a healthy budget. For new grads who have already incurred credit card debt (http://www. freedomdebtrelief. com/creditcarddebt. php), there is no better investment than paying this debt off, as credit cards typically carry extremely high interest rates (typically 15 percent to 30 percent). While paying the minimum on student loans, grad should pay as much as possible to eliminate credit card debt – while they avoid charging anything new.

4. Pay other loan obligations next. After credit cards, graduates should pay other debt -- like personal loans and auto loans -- as quickly as possible. "If you must pay interest, you are better off paying it on student loans, where you can receive a tax deduction, rather than on consumer loans, which offer no tax benefit," Gallegos explained.

5. Take tax benefits. Most new graduates can deduct up to $2,500 per year in student loan interest payments. In 2009, the deduction phased out for taxpayers with annual incomes between $60,000 and $75,000 ($120,000 to $150,000 for those filing joint returns). New graduates also might qualify for additional education credits based on the amounts paid for education during this tax year. A tax advisor can help graduates receive all the education-related deductions and credits for which they qualify.

6. Save for an emergency. Whatever their budget, new graduates should set aside some cash to cover unexpected expenses. "Everyone needs an emergency fund of at least $500 to start with, building to enough to cover basic living expenses for at least six months," Gallegos said. Graduates can begin by saving money from graduation or other gifts, or simply begin putting an extra few dollars into a jar every day or week.

7. Know what to do if paying is not possible. Students who cannot pay student loan obligations should immediately contact the lender. Many student loans can be deferred for a time, although interest will continue to accrue. Do not stop paying the loan -- this is called "default," and damage from defaulting can prevent borrowers from buying a home or car or getting a job, apartment or insurance for years to come.

8. Begin saving for retirement. The early working years are prime time to save for retirement. Investments made early on have many years to grow. If a new grad has a job where his or her company matches a portion of funds employees contribute to the employer-sponsored retirement plan, the grad would be wise to take advantage of that program. Not doing so is like giving money away.
