Quantum Simulations, Inc., a developer of artificial intelligence (AI) tutoring and assessment software, was recently awarded the national Tibbetts Award, the highest recognition given by the federal government to small businesses for research.

Quantum is one of two companies from Pennsylvania to win this prestigious award which recognizes exceptional small business achievement in the areas of leading-edge research, technological innovation and economic impact. Only 55 companies received this award across the country out of more than 4,000 companies that participate in the SBIR program each year.

SBIR is a federally-funded competitive grant and contract program involving several agencies including the U. S. Department of Education, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Labor, Department of Defense and many others. To date, Quantum has received 17 awards totaling $6 million, an impressive track record given that the proposal award rate is typically less than 10 percent.

“The founders and employees of Quantum are honored to be a recipient of the Tibbetts Award,” states Rebecca Renshaw, Co-founder and Executive Vice President at Quantum. “The SBIR program is extremely competitive and includes many outstanding companies. Through the support and funding of the SBIR program, Quantum continues to create and deliver new generation artificial intelligence tutoring and assessment technologies that are truly making a difference in education.”

As a direct result of SBIR funding, Quantum has developed and distributed artificial intelligence Tutors for science and mathematics education and continues to expand its educational software offerings to include more mathematics and new business subjects for K-12, higher education and adult learning.

The 2006 Tibbetts Awards Ceremony and Congressional Reception will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 in Washington, DC. For event details and a complete listing of winners, please visit www. tibbettsawards. org.
