VentrAssist(TM) LVAD First 100 Patients - Clinical Data Presented at International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation meeting



Ventracor (ASX:VCR) announced today the presentation of summary clinical data of the first 100 patients implanted with the VentrAssist(TM) third generation left ventricular assist device (LVAD), an implantable blood pump designed for long term use in patients with advanced heart failure.

 There have now been 108 patients implanted with the VentrAssist, for over 50 patient years of support, and 42 patients currently supported, with the longest duration of two years and eight months. This is greater experience than all other third generation centrifugal LVADs combined. The VentrAssist is market released in Europe (CE Mark) and is the subject of two US clinical trials for Bridge to Transplant (BTT) and Destination Therapy (DT) indications.



Summary clinical data from the first 100 VentrAssist patients was presented today at a plenary session of the 2007 annual meeting of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) by Professor Don Esmore of the Alfred Hospital, in Melbourne.

The matter is expected to come up for a vote at tonight’s meeting.

The Raleigh, North Carolina City Council is considering a ban on smoking in parks or greenways owned or operated by the city but the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association says it has a better idea – post courtesy messages, instead. The matter is expected to come up for a vote at tonight’s meeting.



“There are so many things wrong with legislated smoking bans,” said Chris McCalla, legislative director of the IPCPR. “Such bans result in job losses, losses in revenue to local, state and federal coffers, and loss of constitutional rights given to citizens by the state and federal governments. Worst of all, claims regarding the alleged negative effects of secondhand smoke – especially in wide open spaces like parks – are more than inaccurate, they are downright misleading.”



McCalla says there is no need to ban smoking in such outdoors areas and, even if it were enacted, there would be virtually no practical way to enforce it.



“The oh-so-brief encounters of random whiffs of smoke will not harm anyone. After all, even the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States Department of Labor has established safe levels of secondhand smoke. Some people just don’t like the smell of smoke, but there’s no reason that the rights of smokers should be trumped by a few non-smokers. Besides, a good cigar or pipe usually emits quite an enjoyable odor.”



Some have argued that children are apt to pick up cigarette or cigar butts and put them in their mouths.



“I don’t believe that is a real concern as opposed to a manufactured one. And, even if it were real, there are littering laws that, if enforced, would eliminate that alleged problem,” McCalla said.



McCalla asked, “What if someone complained about the odor of cheap perfume or wet dogs? What if someone complained about seriously obese people taking up more than their share of seating space in the shelters and on buses?



“Imposing a smoking ban in public parks is just one more step on a slippery slope that could lead to even more ridiculous conclusions,” he said.



Instead, McCalla believes posting signs urging smokers to display courtesy to non-smokers with whom they share bus shelters is the civil way to manage the situation.



“This way, everybody wins.”

FED Stays Put On Interest Rates, But Public Should Beware



Parsippany, NJ, (July 14, 2000) - Despite the Federal Reserve Board's decision to hold steady on interest rates at their recent June meeting, the public should be aware that efforts to slow the U. S. economy has only hit a small road block. Champion Mortgage financial experts believe that interest rates will rise again before the close of the year and warns the public to take a strong look at their financial situation, well in advance of the next FED Open Market Committee meetings on August 22 and October 3.



Based on the Fed's decision to raise interest rates six times since June 1999, a total of 1.75 percentage points to 6.5%, Don Mather of Champion Mortgage suggests that homeowners are in position to be strongly affected by the progression of rising interest rates and the possibility of falling into deeper debt. The increased rates push up everything from credit cards to auto loans. Mather claims that many fail to pay attention to credit card interest rates and accrue large amounts of debt due to interest charges. "The rising rates take time to hit consumers and they should prepare now for when it does push the wallet," Mather states.



In the coming weeks and months, the FED will be weighing conditions that may generate heightened inflation pressures in the near future, and now is an opportune time to plan for your financial future. "Re-financing homes, credit debt consolidation and home improvements are very common procedures in today's prospering economy," continued Mather. "The average cost of homes in metropolitan communities is rising along with interest rates and many homeowners have substantial equity built up in their home. With the rising interest rates of today, home equity loans can provide for solid financial footing for homeowners."



As rising interest rates are working to slow the economy, the public has an opportunity to explore the advantages of consolidating finances in home equity loans. Some benefits include:

The plant-derived DuPont™ Zytel® 610 nylon resin that debuts on a new automotive radiator end tank from DENSO Corp. illustrates the benefits of close collaboration throughout the value chain and marks the first use of DuPont renewably sourced plastic in mechanical components exposed to the hot, chemically aggressive underhood environment.

In this case, DENSO engineering and DuPont R&D embarked on development of a new material for use in a higher performance radiator end tank that meets auto manufacturers’ needs for sustainable solutions. The new material, developed jointly by DENSO and DuPont in a proprietary process, contains 40 percent renewable content by weight derived from the castor bean plant, and meets requirements for exceptional heat resistance, durability and road salt resistance – attributes DENSO says were difficult to deliver with many resins containing a high percentage of plant-derived ingredients.



Production of the part for the global vehicle market begins this spring and DENSO has announced intentions to use the material in a wide range of products to reduce use of limited oil resources and reduce CO2 emissions in its processes to help prevent global warming.
